The documentary follows anthropologist Jonathan Bornman, Ph.D. on a quest to find out “if” and “how” the nonviolent peacemaking way of Jesus works in the real world.

The documentary begins in Nickle Mines, PA to learn the story of radical forgiveness following the Amish school shooting. Then, the film visits a Sufi Muslim community in Harlem, NY who tell of following a West African Muslim pacifist tradition, even as they faced violence and murder as new immigrants.

The climax of the film comes in Central Java, Indonesia. In the most populous Muslim country in the world, we learn about a Mennonite pastor who visited a Muslim militia commander. During a time of extreme tension, fear and violence between Christians and Muslims, these two men forged an unlikely friendship and changed the course of their city. Find out what happens when the pastor visits his enemy!

Jonathan Bornman is a full-time missionary with Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM), where he leads the Christian-Muslim Relations Team. Unexpected Peace is a new outgrowth of that work! Jonathan says, “The way we are making the film is part of the ministry. Our lives are a letter from Jesus to the world and to the people we are working with and interviewing.”
